The First Production Master Cut Made with SimuLathe — LathesVille Berlin, March 3, 2022

On March 3rd, 2022, at LathesVille in Berlin, the first production master cut made with SimuLathe was successfully approved for manufacturing.

This was not a test cut or demonstration. The master shown in this video entered the actual record production chain, making it the first production release cut with SimuLathe.

The event took place 281 days before the public release of SimuLathe on December 9th, 2022.

What began as a crazy idea by Helmut Erler, Vladislav Goncharov and Fabien Schivre evolved into a tool that fundamentally changed the workflow of professional disc mastering. For the first time, groove geometry, pitch, depth and cutterhead behavior could be analyzed and optimized in advance, reducing the need for dummy runs, test cuts and repeated mastering passes.

What the industry said:

"SimuLathe has changed the game completely for cutting long sides. I never have to do a dry run to optimize level / space usage. And the safety limiters give me confidence that my pitch and depth system can deal with the challenges of modern digital production techniques. It’s the best addition to my lathe since upgrading my pitch computer."
— Greg Reierson, Rare Form Mastering

"Simulathe is absolutely sublime, and well thought out in every aspect. I honestly cannot see myself cutting master discs without it going forward. I'm a lifetime subscriber. Highly recommended."
— Tim Xavier, Man Made Mastering

"It's literally Henry Ford's Model-T revolution in phonography."
— Kamil Kaczmarek, Optical Disc Mastering

"SimuLathe is the modern tool that cutting engineers have all been waiting for."
— Josh Bonati

"It's very well done. Lots of useful features. It's nice to see something so difficult executed so well."
— Paul Gold

Special thanks to the many mastering engineers, cutting engineers, manufacturers and production experts who helped shape, evaluate and test SimuLathe throughout its development.

Vinyl Record Press Media May 28, 2026 10:00 AM

Ten years ago this January I managed to get the keys to a bunker. I had been looking for a space to build a lab; a space with enough room to start new projects, invite people to collaborate on music, visual art, live performances, live streaming, and any other idea that might come along. One of the ideas I wanted to try was getting a vinyl cutting machine, a lathe, to make vinyl records in-house. I liked the DIY approach; it gave me a sense of freedom. I saw it as a way to document the things that happened in the lab, through small runs of vinyl records. I loved the idea of being able to bypass the whole label planning process and cut music to vinyl on the same day it was recorded. Over the years, many sessions and collaborations have been added to the archive this way, exclusively on limited vinyl.

Fast forward ten years, and many of those initial ideas have come to fruition. STOOR Live, Stay Home Soundsystem, Knob Twiddlers Hangout, and Pink Noise have all unfolded nicely, thanks to the involvement and energy of a growing circle of collaborators. This year the focus is on further developing the vinyl cutting and custom packaging ideas that have been evolving over time. New music is currently taking shape in the studio, with a series of releases planned for the coming months.

To kick off this new series of releases, I’m re-releasing the first two records ever to come out of the STOOR project: S1 and S2, the first two editions of the vinyl archive. At the time they were intentionally released under the obscure alias JPG, with only 50 copies made. Now they are being re-released as Speedy J, digitally and on vinyl. The vinyl editions come in the classic STOOR vinyl archive packaging: each hand-numbered copy housed in 450gsm sleeves with magnetic flaps and an info pocket, complemented by anti-static, anti-dust audiophile inner sleeves.

S1 and S2 re-release: Lathe-cutting vinyl in the lab!

Vinyl Record Press Media January 18, 2026 2:42 PM

I paid $135 to turn my audio into a real vinyl record... and I may have been ripped off. Ever get so excited for something that you’re already imagining how perfect it’s going to be?
Yeah… this vinyl record was that for me.

I’ve been working on a music project with Cedar Miles, and I thought it’d be incredible to get custom vinyl made as a keepsake. Full sleeve, full-color labels, the whole deal. It arrived looking beautiful.

But the moment I dropped the needle, the disappointment hit fast.

- Mono
- Low clarity
- Shallow grooves
- Surface noise louder than the music

So today, we’re diving deep into why this happens.
We’ll compare lathe-cut vinyl vs pressed vinyl, break down the technical differences, talk through the limitations of certain materials, and go over the alternatives if you want a custom record that actually sounds good.

Whether you’re an artist, a collector, or a vinyl nerd like me, this is a look behind the curtain that can save you time, money, and heartbreak.

Chapters in this video:
00:00 – The vinyl that disappointed me
00:28 – What I expected
00:38 – Dropping the needle
01:45 – Pressed Vinyl: How it works
02:56 – Lathe-Cut Vinyl: What’s different
04:02 – Why lathe cuts often sound bad
04:42 – Better alternatives to consider
06:15 – Final thoughts & what I’ll do next

If you enjoy vintage tech, old formats, and deep dives into how things actually work, hit subscribe and stick around. Plenty more coming soon.

$135 for ONE Record... Here's What You Actually Get

Vinyl Record Press Media December 3, 2025 9:00 PM

Vinyl mastering for electronic music demands precision — not every mix will survive the physical constraints of the vinyl press. In this video, I use TDR Simulathe to visualize and understand how a digital master translates into a real groove, and what can go wrong when width, phase, or low-end aren’t under control.

We’ll explore the key adjustments needed to make your tracks cut beautifully on vinyl: subtle stereo management, low-end refinement, and controlled dynamics. Using tools like Brainworx panEQ, Tone Projects Basslane Pro, M/S processing, multiband compressors and transparent filtering, I’ll show how to bring electronic mixes into compliance with the format — elegantly and without compromise using both TDR Simulathe and ADPTR metric AB visualisation tools.

Exploring the unique challenges of mastering for vinyl, especially for electronic music with its demanding low end and stereo information. This video discusses how to master for vinyl and previews potential issues before vinyl pressing using specialized tools. Learn about preserving analog audio quality in the vinyl vs digital world.

If you master or produce techno, ambient, or deep electronic music, this is a must-watch to understand the physics behind the art of groove translation.
