Audio Cassette Tapes

This YouTube playlist captures the full spectrum of the modern cassette‑tape resurgence — from market trends and nostalgia‑driven demand to manufacturing, mastering, DIY production, and the cultural weirdness that keeps tapes alive. It blends journalism, tech analysis, collector culture, and hands‑on production insight, giving a panoramic view of why cassettes refuse to die.

This video is a walkthrough of my Cassette Label Maker on texs.org, showing how to design and PRINT cassette label stickers on pre-cut label paper.

Here is the website: https://texs.org/cassette

There you can paste your playlist URL into the search bar -- works with playlists from SoundCloud, YouTube Music, Bandcamp, TIDAL, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube playlists, Spotify), and you can also upload an M3U playlist file if that’s your setup, or you can just search for an album.

My site then automatically splits your playlist into Side A and Side B. You can edit this placement further. I also added live updates to the duration calculation, so if your planning to make a cassette, you can plan the length accurately.

From there, you can zoom the artwork in or out, edit the text, hide track numbers, change fonts, swap cover images, and “colorize” the whole label in one move for that old-school tape look. You can also adjust the background and opacity so the text stays readable.

When you’re ready to print, I show the copy workflow that makes printing way less annoying: copy with bleed (so you don’t get white edges), then paste into a pre-cut label template in Photopea. I also show how to position the design using the inner circle, how to avoid bleed overlap between labels, and the crucial step: hiding the template/guide layer before you print.

Last, I demo the browser print gotcha that messes up alignment. Even if it looks like “100%,” you still need to set print scaling to a custom 100% in the print dialog so it comes out true-size. Then it’s just orientation (watch the chamfered corner) and applying the sticker.

Here's the paper I'm using: https://www.onlinelabels.com/products/ol275

Also I've built a mode for generating J-Cards, and here's the video:

Chapters
00:00 – What this is (cassette label maker + printing stickers)
00:11 – Grab a playlist link and make sure it’s public
01:00 – Paste the link, and then tweak your design
02:03 – PRINTING ----- Copy with bleed vs copy original (why bleed matters)
02:29 – Paste & Print workflow, pre-cut label paper + Photoshop template
03:26 – Prevent overlap, center using the inner circle, hide guide layer
03:45 – Printing in Chrome/Edge: set custom scale to 100%
04:20 – Orient the sheet correctly, apply the label to the cassette 6:30

7 Best Cassette Players 2026! Retro Revival

Vinyl Record Press Media February 23, 2026 4:53 PM

Whether you just want to do sample work or run full digital mixdowns through cassette, In this video I show a easy and quick way of adding cassette to your music production set up, as well as taking advantage of an audio interfaces monitoring function to "fake a 3rd tape head" to allow us to monitor exactly what we've put to tape - in near real time! Most people are interested in the difference between the digital mix and a cassette run, and sometimes it can be a little awkward to send things back and forth to tape. In this video I use the Solid State Logic SSL2+ but note that on most modern audio interfaces you can use the same set up, as long as it has 2 inputs and 2 outputs (a main and a headphone usually) and most should have a "INST MONITOR" like on the Focusrite example, allowing you to use pretty much the exact same set up here.

This can be a great way of adding cassette to your set up without the more cumbersome aspects of having to constantly rewind to hear how your tape recording sounds on a 2 head machine.

⚙️ Recording gear that I used but you can replace with whatever works for your set up!:
• Fostex X28-h Cassette Multitracker as the Recorder
• Solid State Logic SSL 2+ Audio Interface to route signals in and out of the cassette recorder without a mixing board ( a few years old now but still does the job beautifully)
• 2 x 1/4 Jack to RCA Cables
• 1 x 1/4 Jack to 3.5mm Cable for our Fake 3 Head Monitoring Set up

This video does assume some basic knowledge about using a mixing console but I wanted to make a full tutorial for those who might already have the gear lying around but might be put off by the more time consuming aspects of tracking to tape - but also for those who are on the fence about adding it to their own set ups! Multitrackers are a bit of a timepiece now but still hold up today for the beautiful way they effect sound and even with a few years under there belts the preamps really do hold up to today's standard. Running digital mixes through cassette CAN be a cheap and easy way of adding saturation, compression and a overall glue to your sounds - as well as freeing up the ability to physically manipulate the results using speed, pitch, tape formulation and length.

👉 If your into analog gear and strange set ups then consider subscribing as I am going to try make a series of this AND cover the more coveted 3 head machines which for this particular set up would save you even more time!

I hope you are able to take elements from this and use it in your own audio workflow and if you have any questions or interesting ways that you use cassette please let me know in the comments - I'd love to hear!

Stay tuned for the next mish mash of wiring and as always - LOVE!

This video walks through my J-Card Generator — a web tool for creating fold-out cassette inserts with track lists, lyrics, liner notes, and custom artwork, all at true print resolution.

You can search for an album, paste a Spotify or YouTube playlist, or upload your own files. The generator automatically splits tracks into Side A and Side B, then lets you expand from a classic 3-panel J-card all the way up to an 8-panel fold with nested sizing so it actually folds clean.

Try it here:
https://vhs.texs.org/en/jcard

You can tweak fonts, colors, covers, barcodes, logos, and stickers, rotate the layout to check orientation, and export full-resolution inner and outer spreads ready to print at 100%.

If you’re making mixtapes, custom releases, gifts, this is built for that exact workflow.

00:40 - How to do multi-panel jcard layouts
01:07 - How to pull in a playlist from Spotify
01:20 - How to do high-res cover art for Jcards
01:42 - Play the soundtrack your working on
01:49 - How to Fetch lyrics and liner notes
02:17 - How to adjust text size for Jcards
02:55 - How to adjust colors
03:15 - How to set QR code to Spotify Playlist (auto)
03:30 - How to divide side A & B for your cassette (auto)
03:59 - How to add decals
04:15 - How to print Jcards on Legal paper

Also, the paper I used for printing this was a 60 lb legal paper, and it was a little thick to fold but felt prett snug. I think you could go for a thinner gloss and it would feel perfect. 5:07

Vote for The Mixtape Series to Win a Webby Award: https://wbby.co/57585N

I thought tapes were dead, but it turns out they’re STILL the backbone of the digital world today.

Welcome back to Mixtape, this is the final episode in my four part series on how cassette tapes changed the world. We’ve already looked at the past, but today we’re looking at the present and future of tape. Not only did cassettes sort of, invent the internet, tape is more important than ever.

The personal mixtape is the closest thing we have to a time machine.
It’s so much more than just a playlist of songs. If you’ve ever received one, you know what I mean.

Welcome back to Mixtape, this is part 3 of my 4 part series on cassette tapes. We’ve seen how tapes upended music distribution, and put a crack in reality, but today we’re looking at the magic within these cassette time machines, going to… the moon. and getting… very personal.

The Apollo 11 Mixtapes Prove The Power of Cassettes (Mixtape Ep. 3)

Vinyl Record Press Media October 23, 2025 1:00 AM

Vote for Mixtape to Win a Webby Award: https://wbby.co/57585N

Welcome back to Mixtape, my 4 part series about how cassette tapes changed the world. I’ve been listening to music exclusively on cassettes, and collecting stories about tapes, trying to figure out why they’re seeing a comeback. What I’ve found is mind blowing.

New technologies are just first drafts - what we actually DO with them is the real story.

Today I have two stories that push this idea in opposite directions. One shows how an art form built on cassettes settled into something simpler. The other shows how the same magnetic particles that captured “reality” ended up breaking it.

Cassette sales are at a 20 year high, but don’t call it a comeback - we live in a world reshaped by how we chose to use magnetic tape.

The cassette tape comeback made zero sense to me - until I started pulling the thread.

My journey took 3 paths: a month of listening exclusively to cassettes, diving into how they revolutionized the music industry, and collecting stories of how tapes changed the world. It turns out, this is more than just nostalgia.

Over the next 4 weeks I’ll show you how cassettes aren’t “making a comeback” - they’re the foundation for the modern world.

Minor Correction: Simon later told me he misspoke and only 5 songs were legally allowed, not 7! Even less!
