Iceland's first pressing plant since 1986 is coming in 2026 to the Iceland Eco-Business Park (https://icelandecobusinesspark.is), near the Keflavik International Airport. The 40-minute press conference was held at Iceland Music on Nov. 7, 2025.
Thermal Beets Records, a startup (https://thermalbeets.is), signed a letter of intent with IEBP to build what will become the world's only geothermal-powered record factory, exclusively manufacturing records made from a 100% fossil-fuel-free material to replace PVC, the standard for vinyl records. Greenpeace considers Polyvinyl Chloride to be the most environmentally harmful plastic.

It's easy to focus on various aspects of producing a vinyl record. The role of the mastering engineer and lacquer cutter has become more intense with the rebirth of vinyl.

The capability and quality of pressing plants has also brought a variety of comparisons based on the physical vinyl product we receive.

But between all that is somewhat of a black art known as plating. Although plating can't make a lacquer sound better, it must be done properly so that the stamper which actually molds the grooves into a record are accurate and withstand the rigors of the tons of pressing weight put into the puck that forms the record against the negative image (grooves out) of the stamper.

Part 1 of my 3-part video series on Record Technology Incorporated (RTI) takes us behind the scenes of plating and the subsequent father/mother to stamper process that most record production utilizes.
